We have had reports of cyber criminals imitating court telephone numbers (“spoofing”) and demanding that citizens pay money for fines or fees in cases involving relatives. These calls are not valid. New Mexico Courts will never call citizens to ask for payments of any kind.

The State of New Mexico provides court services to wide range of people, including those who speak limited or no English and those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

According to the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), the most frequently encountered languages in New Mexico’s courts, as of 2014, were:

  1. Spanish
  2. American Sign Language (“ASL”)
  3. Navajo, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic

The Second Judicial District Court makes every effort to provide services to all LEP (Limited English Proficiency) persons.  The Court schedules spoken and signed language interpreters for courtroom hearings in compliance with Supreme Court rules and AOC policies.  The Court is also responsible for taking reasonable steps to ensure that LEP individuals have meaningful access to services outside the courtroom.  Language services outside the courtroom include routing, daily communications and interactions between court staff and LEP individuals as they request information, file documents, schedule appointments and so on.
